Description of Selected News: "Rafsanjani condemns Hariri assassination

TEHRAN (IRNA) -- Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Tuesday condemned the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Rafsanjani said in his message that the report on assassination of Hariri and his death in Beirut blast had depressed him.

While strongly condemning such "sinister terrorist measures", Rafsanjani condoled Lebanese President, government and nation, especially the bereaved family of Hariri on the catastrophe.

Also Majlis speaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel condemned the assassination of Hariri.

He said the people or groups behind the irreparable assassination are the enemies of Lebanon's unity.

A massive car bomb killed Lebanon's former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on Beirut's waterfront on Monday.

At least eight others, some of them Hariri's bodyguards, also died.

Hariri's motorcade was blown up as it passed along an exclusive section of the city's waterfront Corniche.

The explosion which took place close to the St. George Hotel gouged a deep crater on the road, ripped facades from luxury buildings and left half a dozen cars ablaze on streets carpeted with rubble.

It appeared to be the biggest bomb explosion in the city since the Lebanese civil war ended in 1990. The blast could be heard even outside Beirut's city limits and shattered windows of buildings located hundreds of meters away."
